Case Study 3 - Midlands Electricity Engineering Services (MEB) :

MEB has seen almost constant change including regulatory review and new ownership.

Following its acquisition by a US based utility MEB sought to optimise shareholder value through a range
of activities including; streamline engineering operations, implement new structures, rationalise into new
locations, develop partnerships with external contractors.

The Task:

Harness the change capability within the organisation and motivate the team to deliver.

Develop competencies and focus key resources on achieving the full financial and operational benefits
committed to by the distribution engineering team as part of the wider integration project.

The Changesmith Approach

Review operational strategy.
Work with MEB internal consulting resources to understand the proposals, financial deliverables and
milestones.

Identify and engage key resources.
Prior to developing a training led improvement approach all key resources were interviewed to establish
current competency levels, specific local needs and commitment to the improvement process.

Deliver a series of improvement workshops.
Each business unit contributed to a training event designed to provide and test the skills required to
develop local improvement implementation plans. These plans were developed within the workshop and
followed up locally using group and 1:1 coaching tools and evaluated through the developed performance
management system.

Benefits & Results

Re-structuring benefits in excess of £20m delivered within predicted time scale. Financial benefits of
accelerated distribution engineering delivery ensure that Changesmith inputs are self financing.

Local improvement plans deliver additional operational & financial benefits including a streamlined new
business (sales) process.

An increased capability to manage change with developed core skills in opportunity identification &
problem solving, change leadership and benefits assessment.
